  1. One moment of growth was the mock tutoring session in the writing fellows practicum. I had a lot of anxiety about how I would perform when it was time to give feedback to a student, especially when they weren’t being receptive. However, when I was actually put in the scenario, I felt like I was able to navigate it well, and able to pivot when I started getting pushback from the “grumpy student.” Another moment was in my first meeting with a tutee, and at the end of the session she was very grateful for the feedback I gave and even asked if she could make another appointment with me. This made me feel very proud of myself, as I had intentionally made sure I knew the source material for the exam she was revising so I could offer the best help. Another moment of growth was in my second meeting with a student, and once we were done revising her exam, she started asking about general tips for doing a timed essay. This felt like i was being seen as more than a content expert, and more of a writing expert.

  2. I went into this program already having some experience in tutoring. I initially thought that what I was going to be doing would be similar to the work I do in SASC. It was also helpful to see a writing fellow’s mock appointment. I did not expect the personal experiences being shared with me from Dr. Anderson as he spoke with me about his experience with the students in his class, and what he is worried about. I’ve only met with one student so far, but I do think that getting some hands on experience with working with a student and seeing them grow more confident throughout the session truly gave me the perspective of being a Writing Fellow that I did not previously have. I believe a Writing Fellow is someone who supports students in their thought process related to writing in order to help them build confidence in their writing process and to help them be confident in the writing they do in the future.

  3. Although I have yet to meet with a student, I feel like this has been a positive experience. I have learned a lot from the class on how to help others with writing. The strategies on outlining, editing, and facilitating a revising process is really interesting to me. I have been a student for so many years, and it is interesting to see academics from a new perspective. I feel like I appreciate the work that Professors do. Through being in the class, I have seen how hard it is to get students to talk and how difficult it is to navigate the silence. I have also noticed the amount of students watching TV or online shopping, while the professor is teaching. My favorite part of this program is the faculty mentorship. I feel like Dr. McCray has a lot to teach me and I love working with her.
