  1. I could see someone in the English major benefit from the writing fellows program because it isn’t a popular major in this school, so someone taking any sort of English based class centering around writing, I want to say that would be all of them, may have someone to lean on who is already familiar with how the class syllabus will work as it unfolds throughout the year. I could also see a fellow English major benefitting from a different set of eyes to look from- peer review is very important for perspective shift and for the process itself as an English major.

I wish that my tutees could understand the value in their own voice and that the skills I’m helping develop within them comes from someone who is constantly developing them within herself through this new lense. When you become a Writing Fellow, it does feel like you’re always learning and that’s fun, in all honesty. It feels like I’m getting the most out of college now by being a mentor to someone who was once in my shoes. It’s quite fulfilling, and it feels like an ode to all I’ve learned within my time here as an English major, to Professor Miller who convinced me to become one, and to Professor Brod who I’ve been working beside.

  2. 1) I think someone in my major could benefit from being part of the writing felloes program because it exercises another part of their brain. As an oceanography major, we are very STEM focused and more worried about straight-forward data and experimental analysis, rather than careful analysis of writing. In scientific writing, we are more focused on conveying the most basic necessary information in a plain and scientific way to communicate our findings. Being in the WF program, however, has caused me to take a more zoomed-in look at writing, focused more on process than the end goal, and a look at a different style of writing than what I normally work with as an oceanography major.

    2) I with my tutees knew how rare it is to have an opportunity like having a writing fellow in their class. This program makes sure that fellows are available to students as much as possible, and offers them a unique kind of tailored help than other professors and tutors don’t. I also wish that they knew that this program is as helpful as they make it. I am willing and able to help students with every single step of the writing process, as much as they need me. I have had so many office hours where nobody shows up, and I wish that those who struggle with writing took advantage of the opportunity to be “coached” through that process, so they could be better writers in the future.

  3. As a psychology major, I think it has been a great experience being in the writing fellows program. Psychology is full of writing and it has been great to learn skills that could even help myself. Psychology is also about working with people and getting and understanding of others. Being a writing fellow requires lots of interactions with people. I feel like I can apply my psychological principles of behaviors and personality to the people I meet with. It has been really beneficial to meet so many people outside of my major, and this program allows me to help others in something I am passionate about.

I wish my tuttees would realize all the ways that I can help them. I have had such limited students come meet with me. Through the practicum class, I can help them with so many aspects of their paper. I am trained in guiding them through the writing process, outlining, revising, editing, and more. I am also a sound board where they can share ideas for their papers. I can also help answer questions about the prompt and clear up any confusion. I wish they knew that meeting with me could help strengthen their paper. Plus, any skills that I teach them can be applied to various other classes.

  4. The Writing Fellows program alongside Psychology is very interesting since psychological writing is very rooted in fact and applied conclusion. I’ve learned through being a Writing Fellow for Exploring Cultures Through Archeology that similar principles are held. A Writing Fellow’s goal in a humanities or psychology is to help students engage in their thoughts about data that has been found. I think it’s important to know that it’s a very rewarding process overall. When you’re learning, you are likely going to worry about whether or not you are helping students in the correct way. However, over time you get your footing in your tutoring style and students may benefit from the way you tutor compared to other tutors.

For my tutees, I wish that more of them would take the opportunity to learn and grow from their writing. As I’ve researched and we’ve discussed in class, there is a common misconception that writing tutoring is only for those who are struggling in writing-centered classes. I’d argue that writing tutoring is a valuable resource for anyone at any writing level, and I wish that was more understood. The Writing Fellows program gives us the opportunity as students to understand the experience of aiding and/or teaching a college class. In my experience, I was able to get valuable insight from my conversations with my Writing Fellow partner Dr. Anderson. The experience was also valuable for me, as I’ve said many time, I was able to be a resource for students outside of my discipline, and apply the knowledge I’ve gained to have a more rounded view as a peer educator.
