As we are going into week 5, I have a few things on my mind. The biggest one is anticipation. I have attended a couple classes and introduced myself. I have also had a few office hours, except no one has come yet. The writing assignments are not due for a while so students do not feel a need to meet with me yet. I am hoping that some ambiguous students who want to get ahead will start meeting with me soon. I am just excited to actually get to do my job and practice what I’ve learned. Overall, I am feeling pretty good about everything we have learned so far. I understand all of the concepts and I am feeling confident. The one thing I might not be as confident about is taking notes the way the book directed. I think I will be okay with it but I need to actually practice it. I can’t really know if I have it down until I get to have a session to actually apply the skills. Overall, I think I am in really good shape and am excited to have my first session!
For week five, I have a little bit of experience under my belt. I had my first tutoring session with a student on Monday, and it went very well! She came with her writing and some feedback from the professor. This stumped me at first because I didn’t know what she wanted help with, but then she said she wanted to know how to actually apply the feedback. I helped give her some strategies to take into revision, and I also reinforced the good work that she had on the page. One strategy I fud myself instinctively using was personal anecdotes. I was explaining my experience growing as a writer, and what worked for me. These connections seemed to help her realize where she had room for improvement. Before I had prompted, she already asked if she could schedule another meeting, which made me feel very good! I think as the deadline gets closer for the revisions for this assignment, one or two more students will come to me. I do, however, still have worried for students who don’t have as much experience as she evidently did with writing. How far back in the writing process do I have to begin giving strategies for? And how much feedback can I give before it starts to come off too rude.
So far, I have been in the classroom once to introduce myself. It is tricky since the writing assignments that are due in that class are far out. However, I do think that as the due dates get closer, I will have students in my office hours. I’m excited to begin working with the students and apply what we have learned in class. Interestingly, I’ve found myself using the strategies we’ve read/talked about in my tutoring sessions. I’m starting to feel more comfortable with shifting my typical tutoring dynamic to have students tell me more about what they are thinking and feeling about the material. A concept that I feel comfortable with using is personal experiences/anecdotes. I think from the tutee experience, hearing the tutor share their experience can be helpful. I do think something I will have to work on is making sure I can properly time my sessions with students. 20 minutes is not a very long time, and I want to make sure that I can meet the students’ needs in that short amount of time.
